MRSA - (Methicillin-Resistant Staphyloccus Aureus)
MRSA a form of Staph infection that has developed a resistance to methicillin, amoxicillin and penicillin.
Tips for Parents
1. Launder workout clothing after each use
2. Place equipment in a place to completely dry out
3. Encourage hand washing with antibiotic soap
4. Encourage showering immediately after practice or game
5. Cover skin wounds until completely healed
6. Make sure your child reports all skin wounds to their athletic trainer
Warning Signs of MRSA:
1. Longer than normal healing time
2. Any increase in size of wound
3. Unexplained or unusual pain or sensitivity
4. The presence of pus or pustule
5. Induration (hardness)
6. The sensation of heat
7. Abnormal swelling or redness
8. Red streaks around the lesion
9. Abnormal coloration
Wound Care
1. Report all skin wounds to their athletic trainer
2. Clean wounds by washing away debris
3. Cover all wounds during and after activity using antibiotic ointment
4. If wound looks suspicious or isn't healing see a physician
